Glock 17 parts compatibility: slides, barrels and frames by generation
Buying parts for a Glock 17 is easy once you know which generation you have and which parts care about it. Some parts fit every 17 ever made; others changed at Gen 4 or Gen 5 and will not work across the line. This is the working table we use when someone asks whether a part will fit. Where a fit is possible but not intended by the factory, we say so.
Frames
Gen 1 through Gen 4 frames share the same slide rail dimensions, so any Gen 1 to Gen 4 slide runs on any of those frames with the matching recoil assembly. Gen 1 frames have two pins and Gen 2 (after about 1990), Gen 3 and Gen 4 frames have three; the extra pin holds the locking block and the trigger pin locates differently, so locking blocks are specific to two-pin and three-pin frames. Gen 5 frames use their own two-pin locking block, a different slide stop cut and a flared magazine well, and take Gen 5 slides only. Aftermarket serialized frames sold as Glock 17 pattern are almost always Gen 3 pattern.
Slides
A Gen 3 slide fits Gen 1, 2, 3 and 4 frames. A Gen 4 slide is the same casting with a larger recoil spring tunnel and also fits Gen 1 to 4 frames, as long as you use the Gen 4 dual recoil assembly. Gen 5 slides have a beveled front, a different locking block engagement and a cut for the ambidextrous slide stop; use them on Gen 5 frames. The 17L and 34 slides are longer and take their own barrels and recoil assemblies but the same internals as a 17 of the same generation.
Barrels
Gen 1 to Gen 4 Glock 17 barrels interchange. The Gen 5 Marksman Barrel has a different lug profile and hood and is meant for Gen 5 slides; some will drop into older slides but the factory does not intend it, and we list Gen 5 barrels for Gen 5 pistols only. Aftermarket barrels are sold by generation group for the same reason. Threaded barrels for the 17 use 1/2x28 threads in 9mm and add roughly half an inch of length.
Recoil spring assemblies
Gen 1 to 3 use a single spring on a polymer rod, 17 pounds for the 17. Gen 4 uses a dual captured assembly on a steel rod; Gen 5 uses a different dual assembly with its own head shape. None of the three interchange without an adapter, and the 17L and 34 use longer assemblies than the 17 in every generation.
Trigger group
The trigger bar, trigger housing and ejector are shared across Gen 1 to Gen 4 9mm pistols: the housing with the 336 ejector is the 9mm part. Gen 5 uses a new trigger bar, a housing with the 47021 ejector and a different firing pin safety, none of which fit earlier frames. The connector fits every generation, although Glock ships a Gen 5 specific connector and aftermarket makers list theirs by generation. Trigger springs and the trigger housing pin are shared through Gen 4. Aftermarket triggers are sold as Gen 1 to 4 or Gen 5.
Slide internals
The firing pin, firing pin spring, spring cups, spacer sleeve and channel liner are shared across Gen 1 to Gen 4 and changed at Gen 5. The extractor changed twice: early pistols used a non-LCI extractor, Gen 3 introduced the loaded chamber indicator version, and Gen 5 uses its own. The extractor depressor plunger assembly and the slide cover plate are shared through Gen 4. The firing pin safety is Gen 1 to 4 or Gen 5. Slide stop levers are Gen 1 to 4 (with a Gen 4 variant) or Gen 5 ambidextrous.
Frame small parts
The trigger pin, slide lock and slide lock spring are shared through Gen 4; Gen 5 uses its own slide lock spring. The magazine catch is small on Gen 1 to 3, large and reversible on Gen 4, and a different reversible part on Gen 5. Locking block pins differ between two-pin and three-pin frames. Backstraps are Gen 4 or Gen 5 and not interchangeable. Grip plugs are generation specific because the frame openings differ.
Sights and magazines
Every Glock 17 uses the same rear dovetail and front sight hole, so any Glock 17 sight fits any generation. Every 17 magazine fits every 17: Gen 4 and Gen 5 magazines have notches on both sides for the reversible catch, so if you reverse the catch on a Gen 4 or 5 you must use those magazines, but in the standard right-handed position every magazine works.
